Make up in public

Make up in public

According to the original etiquette, you should not wear makeup in public. With the lack of time that many suffer from, it can be useful to make up on the train. Is that rude too?

Etiquette changes
According to etiquette expert Beatrijs Ritsema, it goes a long way to display your entire beauty case, or to get started with face masks. Taking a mirror out of your bag to check your makeup is quite accepted these days. And who could be bothered if a woman puts on some extra lipstick?

There are limits
It is better not to inflict the typical smell of nail polish or nail polish remover on your fellow train passengers. But also spraying perfume or deodorant in a full coupe is not really appreciated. Never do things like clip nails or tweeze eyebrows in public.

Discreet
When touching up your makeup, try to do it as discreetly as possible. When you have the opportunity, it is best to go to the toilet. There is of course a risk that you will be 'caught', but how bad is that really? In any case, making a discreet effort is more polite than touching up your makeup in the reflection of the window, while your date is sitting across from you.

Santé's Beauty Chef Sylvia agrees that you should steer clear of cutting or painting nails on the train. Applying lipstick or blush, on the other hand, is no problem. If you are preparing your car on the train, it is very important that you have a steady hand.
