Meet Tyler Johnston

Have you always been curious about the people behind the new hairstyles and hair colors that you will encounter later in your hair salon or favorite magazine? Tyler Johnston is one such person and our beauty editor Sylvia was allowed to interview him during his model preparation with the coloring product Igora from Schwarzkopf Professional (=salon coloring).

Busy bee The models could be admired in the evening during the gala of the British Hairdressing Awards. For example, every year he designs the Essential Looks for Schwarzkopf Professional, creates the model hair during many shows at the fashion weeks and does the hair for the covers and interviews in glossies all over the world. On the left you see one of the winning hairstyles.

Big name
A busy man who travels all over the world and no longer has time for the 'normal' haircut in the salon. 'But I don't mind, I really like the freedom I have now,' says Johnston, who takes a break with a glass of water between coloring during the interview. He is one of the big names in the hairdressing world, the general public mainly knows him for his design of the 'Mohican' for David Beckham in 2001 and all of Beckham's haircuts after that.

Ignore trends
'I get my inspiration from what I experience and encounter along the way. I see things change around me and I automatically change my style and styling with it. I actually do very little with trends, maybe subconsciously, I am of course right in the middle of it when I do the hair of models during a fashion week. People don't have to like my work. But I do want them to respond to it, to let them know what it does to them.'

Mission
Tyler Johnston also has a mission:'I think it's great to be an example for young people, to be able to transfer something. I myself once had that opportunity at Vidal Sassoon and I am happy to pass it on. You can only learn the craft by training a lot and looking closely at the work of others.'

The trends for 2014
What does he expect for hair and beauty in the future? “I expect men's grooming and hair care to continue to grow. In 2014, the Essential Looks will also have a separate section for men.' And the level of hairdressers in the Netherlands? 'That is very high, they are among the best in Europe. They master the craft, are inventive and open to other opinions. As a hairdresser you have to be able to give something to your customers.'
