How do wrinkles form?

With age, your skin gets more and more lines and wrinkles. How do they actually arise?

Your skin is made up of different layers. The layer just below the top layer (the dermis) contains connective tissue and elastin. They ensure that your skin is firm and elastic. As you get older, less elastin is produced and your skin loses resilience – which can lead to wrinkles. Smoking also ages your skin:toxic substances from the smoke reach the dermis through the blood vessels. Furthermore, UVA radiation from sunlight is a real wrinkle-causing agent, because it penetrates to the dermis and causes damage there.
