These 5 hairstyles are secretly damaging your hair

Do you want to protect your beautiful locks? Then it might be better not to wear these hairstyles anymore (or less) from now on… As nice as they are, they probably cause you more hair damage than you think. And of course you don't want to break her off, right? We've got your back!

1. A tail

Although it is a super easy hairstyle, it is not necessarily the best style for your hair itself. In fact, it's probably the style that can damage your hair the most. This is especially true if you always wear your tail in the same place on your head, which puts constant tension on the same part of your hair. A high tail is therefore the most harmful, because it puts tension on the fine hairs around your hairline. Also, the type of elastic you wear probably won't help. Securing your hair with a fabric hair tie can create friction between your hair and the elastic, which can cause your hair to break. Especially if you have bleached your hair, it is a good idea to wear your tail in other places more often and to switch to other elastic bands. After all, your hair is already more vulnerable!

2. A bun

This easy, to go hairdo can also do a lot of damage to your hair. As with a high ponytail, the problem here is that you are pulling your hair taut in the same spot, which can put tension on it and cause it to break. This problem is especially common in women who have finer hair. What can you do best? Don't wear your bun on top of your head and wear it as loosely as possible. It can also help not to make your bun super tight and to use a scrunchie or a few hair clips to secure it.

3. Tight braids

Braids can be a great way to protect your hair, especially if you have natural texture in your hair. But if you don't do it right, it can have the opposite effect. Braids that are too tight can cause a lot of damage, both to your hair and to your scalp. Your braids should therefore never hurt after they are made. If you can't sleep well because your scalp feels sore, that's a sign that they're too tight. When braiding, make sure to leave some hair out around the beginning of your braids and make sure they are not too tightly braided. You can also use a silk nightcap, which can prevent friction damage to your pillow.

4. Hair extensions

Whether they're hand-knotted, laced, or pinned, extensions that aren't set properly can put stress in too many areas on your head. Worst case scenario? You can get bald spots on your head because of it… If it's extensions that you want to wear for more than a few hours, make sure they are put on by a professional. Also make sure you maintain your hair better and don't wash it too often:once or twice a week is enough!

5. Styling wet hair

Okay, this isn't necessarily a hairstyle, but it is something that can cause a lot of hair damage:styling wet hair. We understand that you want to avoid using heat tools on your hair (because yes, they can also cause damage), but working with wet hair is not the solution either. Hair is at its weakest when it is wet:it is less elastic and can therefore break more easily. Constantly putting your hair in a ponytail or bun when it's wet can cause it to break faster. Therefore, dry your hair first with a (microfibre) towel and let it air dry until it is almost dry before attaching it. You can also blow dry your hair superficially on the lowest setting (don't forget to put in a heat protector beforehand) to get most of the moisture out.
