This is the correct order to apply your skin care products

Day cream, primer, foundation… Or foundation first, then day cream… Or a serum first? What is the correct order for applying skin care products? Beyoncé's dermatologist explains.

Dermatologist Harold Lancer has several famous patients in his address book, such as Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian. “Every skin needs specific care. So you have to create your own 'skin cocktail'. But you have to apply those products in the right order for the best results," he explains in Glamor magazine.

This is the trick

According to Lancer, the trick is to go from thin to fat. Thin products can then be absorbed better by your skin. For example, if you apply a serum after a thick cream, the serum can do its job less well.

Sunscreen is an exception. You should always apply it last, even after your make-up.

Not a good combination

There are also products that you should not combine. For example, it is not a good idea to combine retinol (vitamin A) and acids (such as glycolic acid or lactic acid). Chances are your skin will become irritated. It is also better not to use retinol with benzoyl peroxide (this is often used in acne-fighting products).
