The 'normal vulva' does not exist

Have you ever wondered if you're normal "down there"? Surely! Now scientists have officially determined that there is no such thing as a "normal" vulva. The study was the largest of its kind conducted on vulvas, to establish once and for all what medical papers define as a “normal vulva”.

Swiss researchers analyzed the inner and outer labia, clitoris, vaginal opening and perineum of 657 white women, ages 15 to 84. While they were able to determine the average length of a vulva, the variation in other categories was so great that even defining an average would be wrong.

They found that the average length of the inner labia was 43mm, but some measured 5mm and others measured 100mm. In addition, the average length of the outer labia is measured at 80 mm, with the smallest being 12 mm and the largest being 80 mm. The average length of the clitoris was 7 mm, but the span was found to be 0.5 mm to 34 mm.

The scientists said they had hoped to find a "baseline for the appearance of a normal white vulva," but the results seem to suggest they couldn't.

The news will no doubt come as a relief to women who feel they have to go through the knife to change their vulva for cosmetic purposes.
