What can you do yourself against skin aging?

One of the first things we can tell when we get older is our skin. Aging skin can be dry, thin, irritate more easily, lose some of its resilience and not look as smooth as it used to be. But there are things you can do to protect your skin and make it look better. If you are in your 20s or 30s, it is the best time to prevent signs of aging. Here are some tips that we have put together with Huidzorg Houten, which help against skin aging.

Protect your skin from the sun every day

Sun exposure prematurely ages the skin and contributes to fine lines and wrinkles. Sun protection is therefore essential. You can protect your skin by seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30.

If you smoke, stop immediately

In addition to causing cancer and many other diseases, smoking accelerates the breakdown of collagen and constricts blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to your skin, causing the skin to age quickly. You will then suffer from wrinkles and a dull, sallow complexion.

Drink less alcohol

Having a drink with a friend or enjoying a glass of wine with dinner is fine. But drinking too much alcohol dries out your skin and damages it over time. This can make you look older.

Eat healthy

A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables ensures an intake of antioxidants that can help limit the damaging effects of free radicals on the skin. As much variety as possible should be included, but some foods are known to be high in antioxidants and may even have a skin-protecting effect:carrots, other orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, blueberries, green leafy vegetables, bell peppers, tomatoes, beans, and other legumes , fatty fish (such as salmon) and nuts.

Avoid repetitive facial expressions

When you make a facial expression, you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for many years, these lines become permanent.

Avoid weight fluctuations

Weight fluctuations are often caused by a hectic lifestyle, stress-related eating and little time to exercise. But repeatedly gaining and losing weight can take its toll on skin elasticity. Try to keep your weight the same, with a BMI between 18.5 and 25.

Cleanse your skin gently

Exfoliating your skin can irritate your skin. Irritation of your skin accelerates skin aging. Gentle washing helps remove pollution, makeup and other substances without irritating your skin.

Apply a face cream every day

Moisturizer retains water in our skin, making it look younger. Use a face cream that is tailored to your skin type – dry, oily or a combination thereof.
