Cystic acne:how to treat it effectively?

What causes cystic acne?

Cystic acne is often of hormonal origin. It can appear at the beginning of puberty or during the period of pregnancy. It also happens that it appears during the menstrual cycle or when approaching menopause.

Like any other form of acne, cystic acne is caused by excess oil production in the skin. When this happens, the hair canal is clogged and the sebum can no longer come out. The substance then begins to build up under the skin until it bursts the sebaceous gland. Thus, redness that can be painful to the touch forms on the surface of the skin.

Cystic acne can also appear under various conditions:

  • Pollution
  • Stress
  • Poor diet
  • Tobacco and/or alcohol consumption;
  • Hereditary discomfort.

How to recognize cystic acne?

Cystic acne appears as small red lesions. These lesions are often found on the lower face, upper back, shoulders or neck. Redness is often associated with other characteristic elements of acne such as:

  • Blackheads or whiteheads
  • Papules
  • Pustules (small swellings containing pus);
  • Nodules (hard lesions that are painful to the touch);
  • Cysts or micro-cysts.

It should be noted that cystic acne often leaves ugly scars. That's why it's important to treat it well.

How to get rid of cystic acne?

Despite the pain, many people are still tempted to pop the pimple, which is strongly discouraged. Not only is the lesion likely to scar, but it will enlarge and inflame even more. It is best to consult a doctor as soon as the first symptoms appear.

In its most classic form, cystic acne is treated locally. The doctor will prescribe various solutions to clean and disinfect the skin. A moisturizer could be added to the care to compensate for the drying effects of the treatment. At a more advanced stage, a more specific treatment will be prescribed depending on the patient's age and gender. It is also possible to treat the scars left by cystic acne depending on their shape and location.
