Foundation:how to find its shade?

Choose your foundation shade on the internet is not easy. We may follow the advice of the brand to choose the right shade of foundation, we are never 100% sure that it is the right one. And very often, we find ourselves between two shades...

The easiest way is to go directly to the store to test the different shades and avoid this headache.

Although more and more organic shops are springing up, you just need to live in a remote area, have a busy schedule or prefer online shopping, and go in store becomes a real hassle!

Like thousands of people, I now buy my foundation on the internet. Like 3/4 of them I received the wrong shade over and over again, spent hours on the product pages looking for THE FOUNDATION that would suit my skin type and which shade would finally be the right one .

I've had it all:textures that were too pasty, too dark, too light, makeup that cracked. I even tried to lighten my foundation with moisturizer.

Then one day, I tried yet another technique to find the right shade, and I found the ideal foundation on the first try.

To prevent as many people as possible from making the same mistakes as me, I have decided to show you this technique that will save you time and money. I even slipped you a promo code at the end of this article.

If you take into account all the criteria mentioned in this article, you will never go wrong with the shade of foundation again. So, in the digital age, how to find your foundation shade ?

What is foundation used for?

A little reminder:the purpose of the foundation is to even out the complexion, smooth the skin texture while illuminating the face. We seek to beautify the skin which must then be more beautiful with make-up than bare. The foundation, when properly applied, provides a natural finish, nice coverage for a luminous result and an immediate healthy glow effect. You can opt for a natural make-up, also called "nude", which is light and very natural looking.

Properly applied, the foundation can camouflage imperfections and mattify the T zone (what we generally look for when we have combination skin). Contrary to popular belief, foundation is not used to color the skin and give it a "tanned" effect. It is rather sun powders that have this function.

Why an organic foundation?

Organic and mineral foundations have several advantages. They are composed of ingredients from organic farming and must respect a certain percentage of natural ingredients in their composition. They are free from controversial substances and have a better composition.

In addition, mineral makeup has a major advantage:it lets the skin breathe and does not clog pores. This prevents the development of imperfections on the face.

This type of makeup is often vegan or cruelty-free, which means that they are not tested on animals and do not contain animal substances. Brands are often more committed to the environment.

To find your organic and natural foundation, I advise you to see the NUOO foundation range:

How to find the right foundation shade / color?

The foundation should be the same color as your skin, neither lighter nor darker. It must blend naturally on the face, without creating differences in skin tone or demarcation, or a marked difference in color with the neck. Prefer a yellow-based foundation because 99% of us have a yellow nuanced complexion. It should be noted that a predominantly pink foundation gives a mask effect. The foundation should not change the skin tone, but unify it!

The trick:do not choose a foundation to look more tanned because a demarcation will be visible between your face and your neck. For a return from vacation effect, opt for a bronzer (also called sun powder or terra cotta) to apply in the shape of a "3" on the face. Using a large powder brush (flat or fan), apply the bronzing powder by tapping starting from the temple then surround the eye towards the hairline, join the cheekbones, then form the bottom of the "3" on the edge of the jaw. This application creates a natural relief and captures the light on the face.

Tip 2:do not choose a foundation lighter than your skin tone for a luminous effect. Opt instead for a concealer corrector 2 shades lighter than your skin tone (to be applied before your foundation) and an illuminator to bring touches of light to the prominent areas of the face (chin hollow, Cupid's bow, bridge of the nose, under the brow bone, top of the cheekbone).

As for the foundation brand, several brands are committed to the planet, to animals and to your skin. This is particularly the case of the Avril brand, which offers a wide range of organic and vegan make-up.

Choose a foundation based on my skin tone:fair, medium or matte

The first step to find your foundation shade is to know the complexion of your skin. This will allow you to choose the right shade.

How do we know if our skin is pink or golden?

Generally, fair-skinned women have blonde/red hair and light eyes. Medium-skinned women tend to have brown hair and green to hazel eyes. Finally, women with a dark complexion have brown to black hair and dark eyes.

So, do you have a medium, light or matte complexion?

The foundations to favor by skin tone are as follows:

  • Light complexion:pinkish beige tones will bring you radiance and freshness;
  • Medium complexion:beige tones;
  • Matte complexion:golden tones.

Once your skin tone has been identified, all you have to do is know your skin tone to choose the right foundation!

Identify your skin's undertone to choose the right foundation

Second step when wondering how to choose your foundation:identify your undertones. This is an important step that allows us to clearly identify the shade that suits us.

What are undertones?

There are three main families:hot, cold and neutral. If it seems easy to identify the color of your skin , the notion of undertone may be less obvious to define. Skin color varies with exposure to the sun while the undertone is anchored in the epidermis and does not change.

  • If you have yellow or golden undertones, you have a warm undertone;
  • If you have pink or bluish undertones, you have a cool undertone;
  • Finally, if none of the previous categories seem to suit you (or if you hesitate between the two), you have neutral undertones.

How do I know the undertone of my skin? Cold or hot?

As you will have understood, it is essential to know your undertone in order to choose the right foundation . To achieve this, there are several techniques.

The first technique is that of the wrists. Observe your veins, if they appear more blue or purple, you have a cold undertone. Conversely, if they appear more blue-green, your undertone is warm. If you can't tell which category you belong to, you have a neutral undertone.

The second technique is that of the white sheet and is very simple:simply hold a sheet of paper under your chin and try to identify if your complexion is more yellow / golden or pink / bluish.

Finally, if silver jewelry suits you better than gold jewelry, you have cold undertones and vice versa.

Take your skin type into account when choosing your foundation

It is important to consider your skin type when choosing your foundation. An unsuitable foundation could harm your skin and create imperfections, for example. If you have oily skin and use makeup that is too rich, you will see blemishes appear and your skin may shine. Conversely, if you have dry skin and use a foundation that is not too rich, you risk drying out your skin even more.

In general, oily skin types are advised to use a powder foundation to avoid any shine. Conversely, powder is not recommended for dry skin. It is preferable to use a fluid foundation, which is not likely to crack.

How to choose a foundation shade on the internet?

Thanks to all the tips I have given you, all you have to do is find the foundation that will go perfectly with your skin type. Once you have found the model that suits you, simply define your skin tone and your undertone to choose your foundation shade .

Here is my selection of favorite organic foundations, suitable for all skin types:

How to test a foundation in store?

If you have the opportunity to go to the store, know that the majority of people looking for a foundation make the same mistake:they test the product on their wrist. I was also the first to do so barely a year ago.

What they don't know is that the skin on the wrist is often lighter than the skin on the face. I advise you to test the foundation on your jawline and apply it all over the rest of the face. If there is no demarcation at the level of your neck:you have found your foundation shade !

Are there comparators to find my equivalence with another brand?

There are of course several online comparators that look for equivalent shades between brands and that allow you to find your foundation shade . This allows you to find the brand shade you want to try based on the product you are already using.

These tools are useful, but have several limitations. They do not systematically list organic and natural makeup brands. This also implies that you have already found the shade of foundation that suits you.

One of the best known comparators is Findation.
